Sun Rising - The Songs That Made Memphis
Brisbane Powerhouse
Just say the name of the city Memphis and so many hit songs come to mind, so Sun Rising: The Songs That Made Memphis is a must for music fans at Brisbane Powerhouse, Friday 10 and Saturday 11 June.
As part of the Queensland Cabaret Festival, the songs of many musical greats will be on show, from the king himself – Elvis Presley – to the man in black, Johnny Cash, to the warbling sunglasses-clad Roy Orbison. Throw in Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins and you’ve got a night full of songs to hum along and tap your toes to.
Sun Rising: The Songs That Made Memphis was a sell-out at Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Co-creators Dave Cosma and Damon Smith wanted to pay homage to Sam Phillips, founder of Sun Records, who discovered so many iconic artists.
The songs are performed by a five-piece band, with Cosma saying, “We've done our best musically to capture the originality of the songs, as they were recorded in the '50s. It's easy to over-complicate such simple songs so we've done our best to maintain their original charm to honour the legacy.”
The show will also feature famous tales and anecdotes about the artists, with the material receiving endorsement from Sam Phillips’s family. Audiences and critics alike have loved it, with Beat Magazine declaring it “brilliant… packed full of energy and passion. The set list was out of this world.”
