Mamaput Kitchen

Gaythorne

Mamaput Kitchen is a little slice of Africa tucked away in a tiny Gaythorne shopping centre, across from the old Civic Theatre.

The colourful takeaway, which features a striking mural inside, serves up a mix of home-cooked Ethiopian and Nigerian dishes, prepared onsite by the owner-chef.

Main dishes include Jollof rice (smoky West African rice cooked with tomato & pepper); Egusi Soup & Fufu (Nigerian soup with onions, tomatoes, chili pepper & melon seeds) and Ethiopian dishes such as lentil stew with traditional bergere spice blend, served with injera (tradional bread).

There's also a choice of Ethiopian stews (chicken, beef, split pea or vegetarian combo flavoured with traditional Berbere spice) and served with injera; lentil or chicken & beef broth soup; garden or coleslaw salad; and Mama's Sandwiches  (pulled chicken with bell pepper, pesto cheese and lettuce or tuna mayo and lettuce on Turkish pide).

Meanwhile a range of traditional snacks (or starters) includes Moi Moi (savoury steamed beans); fried plantains; Puff Puff (Nigerian spongy fried pastry) and Chechesa (shredded fresh baked flat bread spiced with Ethiopian cooking butter, chill spice or berbere) served with yoghurt or honey.

Good to know - The friendly owner is more than happy to discuss and describe the dishes on offer. Orders can be pre-placed by phoning ahead.

Need to know - There is limited street parking available.
