Have you ever wondered why artists create self-portraits? QAG’s latest exhibition Looking In, Looking Out celebrates the complex and fascinating subject of the self-portrait with exquisite works on display by Australian and international artists until August 6.

Looking Out, Looking In QAG

From the past to the present, this enlivening exhibition is drawn from QAGOMA’s diverse and vivid Collection and includes contemporary artworks that reflect our times, as well as earlier examples of the self-portrait tradition.

Looking Out, Looking In QAG

While artists have explored the art of self-portraiture for centuries, contemporary society is now very familiar with the concept of the 'selfie' with millions created every day; some artists look inwards to reflect on themselves in modest ways, while others seek to project a more flamboyant image.

Celebrate the intriguing art of the self-portrait at QAG until 6 August 2023!
