Railways 1914-18

Workshops Rail Museum

The award-winning Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich is hosting the culturally valuable exhibition Railways 1914 – 1918 about the contribution of railways in the lead up to, during and after World War I.

The grounds of the Museum and Workshops themselves form a part of the history, with a memorial honouring the Workshops employees who served in WWI erected on the grounds following the armistice in 1919, so a visit really brings home the fascinating reality of the part rail played in the tumultuous period of world history.

Railways 1914 – 1918 Workshops Rail Museum

Railways 1914 – 1918 has many interesting displays for people of all ages to enjoy, with a mix of personal stories, imagery and objects that show the crucial role of railways here and over in Europe where the terrible reality of war played out. Whether they were transporting future fighters from country towns to capital cities in Australia, to taking soldiers and nurses to departure points, to transporting people and supplies in the war territories, railways were linked to the camaraderie, fear, stoicism and courage that pervaded.

The exhibition has sourced its displays from The Australian War Memorial, State Library of Queensland, Queensland State Archives, National Library of Scotland, National Rail Museum in York and several more valuable collections.
