The Australian Cinémathèque at GOMA is pulling back the curtain on an enlivening new program - City Symphony from February to November, 2023.

Vivid, frenetic and thoroughly entertaining; Brisbane’s best kept cinematic secret, GOMA Cinema is raising the roof with unmissable live music and film experience.

Featuring 10 unique live music and film screenings and performances, the new program, which will run monthly, promises to be insightful, fascinating, and visually stunning.

City Symphony GOMA

City Symphony showcases some of the earliest cinematic experiments that meld documentary and film-poem filmic styles. These rarely-screened and captivating films are presented with live music on stage by contemporary musicians, taking the audience on a journey through time and the art of cinema.

Performances include music from post-rock troupe Hazards of Swimming Naked, Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra, electronic duo Zemzemeh, sound-scape artist Madeleine Cocolas, composer Timothy Fairless, Topology founder and double-bassist Robert Davidson, internationally acclaimed tabla player Dheeraj Shrestha, ARIA Award winning Heinz Riegler, classical pianist Mauro Colombis and acclaimed violinist Jonny Ng

City Symphony GOMA

Good to know - Keen to see the original cut as well? The unaccompanied versions of the films will be screening for free each week following the performances, for a chance to compare and contrast the contemporary retelling.

Need to know - Whether you're a film buff, music lover, or simply looking for a unique cultural experience, this program has something for everyone. With previous live music and film events selling out don’t delay securing your seat.
