Sassafras Garden Bar
Paddington
SASSAFRAS GARDEN BAR IS NO LONGER OPERATING.
Sassafras Bar in the Garden is Brisbane’s first dog friendly dog bar, with the longtime Paddington resident Sassafras Canteen opening its leafy back garden on weekends to punters and their 4 legged (on leash) friends.
You don’t have to own a dog though to rock up and enjoy a laidback afternoon or evening with friends in this exclusive little tropical beer garden, where beach umbrellas and BBQ tables rule and the DJ spins retro vinyl.
On the drinks menu are 4 varieties of beer from both local Brisbane breweries Newstead Brewing Co (3 Quarter Time, The Mayne Thing, Liquidamber and Out and a Bout) and Green Beacon Brewing Co (3 Bolt Pale Ale, Cross Knot Kolsch, Wayfarer USA and Windjammer IPA) with a tasting bucket featuring one of each also available.
Cider is Apple or Pear Hillbilly Cider (from the Blue Mountains) and a range of soft drinks includes San Pellegrino mineral waters, sarsaparilla, ginger beer, karma cola and lemnmy lemonade. The wine list is small and global, with 4 white and red varietals by the glass of bottle from Italy, New Zealand, France, Spain and Argentina as well as South Australia and Tasmania. Meanwhile the chilled Rose is from the Loire Valley and Prosecco from King Valley, Victoria.
Some of the bar food gets into the dog theme, with a fun list of delicious hot dogs such as Billy the Bulldog (smokey beef sausage, onion relish, crispy bacon, cheddar and BBQ relish), Louis the Dachshund (Smokey beef sausage, sauerkraut, tomato relish and mustard or, for the vegetarians, Peter the Poodle (red bean and beetroot falafel, chipotle and roasted garlic aioli, avocado, tomato and shallot salsa. And for those who like their hot dogs really hot, look out for Duke the Doberman, with its Texan chilli beef style sausage, chipotle mayo, avocado, chives and jalapenos. (Gourmet sausages are all provided by local butcher Meat at Billy's, who happens to be one of Brisbane’s best butchers).
Any of these can be ordered as part of The Deal, with a side of sweet potato fries and a beer to accompany. As well as hot dogs, there’s a selection of share platters (charcuterie or cheese). The Cure comes with Berkshire ham, salami, one cheese. Mt Zero olives, peach and muscatel chutney and lavosh while the cheese platters come with a choice of two cheeses, pickled figs, toasted bread, lavosh, peach and muscatel chutney and the option of a third cheese. Otherwise for something light there’s sweet potato fries with chipotle and roasted garlic aioli and celery salt.
Need to know – Dogs must sit with their owners at the tables and remain on leash at all times.
Nice to know - For large groups of 15 or more people Sliders platters are available, with a choice pp of 3 out of four options – pulled pork and apple slaw, chermoula spiced grilled chicken, beetroot and red bean falafel or crumbed prawn and lettuce.
A proper dinner (spatchcock, barramundi, rib steak or vegetarian fettuccine) with baked potato and slaw is also available to be booked a couple of days in advance for groups of 15 or more.
