Australia’s most anticipated contemporary at event, the APT8, takes place in Brisbane across QAG and GOMA throughout the summer and into spring of 2016.

The 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art is the world’s largest exhibition of art from Australia, Asia and the Pacific, with the works of 83 artists from 32 countries on display across both galleries. As well as taking over GOMA in its entirety, the APT8 occupies key spaces in QAG, including the iconic Watermall.

The APT8* will see artists from Mongolia, Nepal, Kyrgyz Republic, Georgia and Iraq included for the first time, as well as the most significant Australian involvement to date, with a total of 17 artists (7 of them indigenous).

Captivating new large-scale sculptures, immersive installations, interactive performances and kinetic artwork, and an accompanying schedule of thought-provoking public programs form the basis for the APT8, some highlights of which include:

Vibrant new works by an exciting group of Indian Indigenous artists examine the changes of pictorial styles and forms of storytelling in uniquely contemporary interpretations.

A multi-media installation of performance and dance from across Melanesia – Yumi Danis (We Dance). Commencing with a creative exchange in Ambrym, Vanuatu in November 2014, the project is animated by performances from dancers and musicians from six different island nations.

A major group of paintings by four Mongolian artists that showcases the richness of the Mongol zurag painting movement.

A dynamic APT8 Live performance program happening throughout the exhibition, heavily featuring indigenous artists from Australia.

A wide-ranging suite of publications, online resources and educational material.

*According to QAGOMA Director Chris Saines, the artist selection for APT8 has taken place over the past three years, with the galleries’ highly experienced curatorial team travelling throughout Asia and the Pacific. As well as researching the latest developments in contemporary art, long the way they have liased directly with artists and communities in choosing the new works for this project.
