The Way Back Home

Celtic ancestry is interwoven in the historic cityscapes of Brisbane in The Way Back Home, an ethereal exhibition of works by esteemed local artist Pamela Gough at New Farm’s charming Graydon Gallery.

For Brisbane born Pamela, life in contemporary Queensland is far removed from her family’s Celtic origins and through her work she channels both the ancient and modern to uncover the spirit of the place.

Her intricately detailed paintings and sketches are embedded with maps, stories and symbols, inspired by Celtic and Medieval influences, the patterns of the landscape and her passion for colonial architecture.

The artist’s attention to detail continues in this exhibition of narrative paintings of beautiful buildings, landscapes and symbols, providing a patchwork of stories commanding a closer inspection that reveals the spirit and connection behind each piece.

Way Back Home

Says Pamela, “Many of us, unless we are of Aboriginal descent, can trace our heritage from somewhere else ‘over-the-seas’ and for me it is Ireland and England. My great grandparents made the journey by boat to this new land in the mid 1800’s. My great grandfather apparently even dived off a ship to save the Captain’s son and was granted some land in New South Wales (but we were all called that NSW then) – a true story!”

Fans of Pam’s exhibitions and passionate storytelling narratives of local Brisbane landscapes and historical Queenslanders through texturized paint, old maps and symbols scratched on the canvas won’t be disappointed by her latest offering.

Way Back Home

As she says, “Beneath what we see are the plans and dreams of those who have gone before us and built up the environment we are blessed with today”.
