Wagaya

Fortitude Valley

Updated: Mar 02, 2024

The traditional and futuristic collide in Wagaya, a fabulous upstairs Japanese eating house overlooking the Chinatown Mall in Fortitude valley.

Darkened aisles of carved wooden booths separated by rattan screens are the mainstay for dining, each with their own touch screen for computer ordering, while larger groups can choose from Western style dining rooms or private traditional tatami rooms, also with their own screens.

The extensive menu includes lychee and grapefruit based Japanese cocktails, sake, beer, wine, blue or strawberry lemonade and food-wise, hotpots, bento boxes, burstingly fresh sashimi platters, dragons, yakitori, udon, and a multitude of other delicious morsels – all great value.

The menu system derives from order-as-you-go Isakaya (Japanese pubs) and food is delivered by waitresses in kimonos who glide silently and efficiently up and down the aisles. The status of the order can be checked at any time, as can the food tally and a call button for help is included for the computer-addled.

With its value dining, booths, picture menu, small servings, novelty drinks and ordering system, Wagaya is also a family-friendly restaurant for those with school age children.
