mi:wi
Playhouse Studio 1
Contemporary dance and indigenous culture intertwine in the powerful production of mi:wi, being performed at QPAC’s Playhouse Studio 1 from Feb 5-8.
mi:wi (pronounced mee-wee) refers to the invisible ties we have to our past, future, people and country. In this stunning dance theatre work, choreographer and performer Taree Sansbury uses the practice of Ngarrindjeri weaving to thoughtfully re-connect three Indigenous women.
While speaking to the impacts of climate change, mi:wi also emphasises the important role of future lineages in continuing cultural knowledge. With one eye on the future and the other on the past, Sansbury brilliantly interweaves time and bodies in an attempt to reveal the messenger bird’s warning cry in the present.
Nice to know – mi:wi is part of Karul Projects’ double bill with Thomas E.S. Kelly’s CO-EX_EN. Buy tickets to both productions for just $50 combined (conditions apply).
“mi:wi proves that you don’t need a big performance to fill a big space; you only need a big idea.” – David Collins, Arts Review
