Romeo & Juliet

Romeo & Juliet, the greatest love story of all time, is being brought to life on stage by Queensland Ballet from August 28 to September 7 at QPAC.

This iconic rendition of Shakespeare's famous tale of star crossed lovers, choreographed by Sir Kenneth MacMillan, returns to the Brisbane stage after a sell-out season in 2014. It was the ballet that broke a 54-year box office record for Queensland Ballet.

According to Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Li Cunxin, "This production is one of the most loved and respected versions of Romeo & Juliet in the ballet world". Queensland Ballet is one of the few ballet companies worldwide that has the rights to perform this work, along with internationally-renowned companies the American Ballet Theatre and The Royal Ballet.

When MacMillan's Romeo & Juliet premiered in 1965, audiences were so overcome by the grand production that the dancers received 43 curtain calls, with the audience eventually having to be persuaded to leave the theatre.

Queensland Ballet dancers will prepare for the opening of Romeo & Juliet on August 28 under the watchful eye of Sir Kenneth’s widow Lady Deborah MacMillan (an established artist in her own right as a painter and set designer) who will travel to Brisbane for the season.

“This is just such a magnificent ballet that wonderfully weaves through Shakespeare’s classic tale of tragic loss, waring families and young love. If you only see one ballet this year, then this is definitely the one to see. It’s our blockbuster, not-to-be-missed ballet event of the year” said Li Cunxin.

Don't miss your chance to see this epic production where the streets of Verona are brought to vibrant life with elegant costumes, stunning sets, and daring choreography that matches the dramatic heights of this tragic love story.

Nice to know - Acclaimed Conductor, Alondra de la Parra (Queensland Symphony Orchestra), will take the baton at select performances of Romeo & Juliet.
