Romiosini and Beyond

Concert Hall, QPAC

Romiosini and Beyond celebrates the greatest orchestral and choral composer in Greek History, Mikis Theodorakis, with a rousing concert at QPAC on Wednesday, May 22.

Regarded as the greatest Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis, composed over 1000 songs from epic orchestral masterpieces to internationally renowned music for Academy Award winning films including Zorba the Greek (1964) and Serpico (1973).

This exclusive one-off concert will be conducted by internationally acclaimed orchestra conductor, and Musical Director and Conductor for the Athens Olympics, George Ellis.

Theodorakis' incredible body of work will be brought to life by Sydney Concertmaster Dimitris Calligeros, together with international vocalist Dimitris Basis, a 4-piece Greek band and 40-piece orchestra.

The first half of this two-part concert features the incredibly moving Romiosini, performed for the first time by a full symphony orchestra.  This cycle of 9 songs, based on the poetry of Lenin Peace Prize winner Yiannis Ritsos, is a poignant tribute to Greece.

The concert’s second half, Beyond, is dedicated to Theodorakis’ most popular music including his world-famous score for Zorba the Greek and his other celebrated cinema work. Common in modern Greek music, the bouzouki will feature in the second half.

This spectacular music event comes days after Brisbane's much-loved Greek festival Paniyiri takes over South Brisbane, making the month of May truly a tribute to all things Greek.
