A shimmering fairytale of love, sacrifice and longing is coming to Brisbane, with Opera Queensland presenting the breathtaking opera Rusalka.
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, this stunning opera follows the story of Rusalka, a water nymph who gives up everything she knows after falling for a Prince in the hope of finding freedom and love. But as the story unfolds, things take a much darker turn.
Featuring one of opera’s most adored scores, composer Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka is filled with sweeping romance, rich Czech folk influences and the unforgettable aria Song to the Moon - a hauntingly beautiful piece that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
This spectacular new production reunites the award-winning creative team behind Opera Queensland’s acclaimed La Traviata, with direction by Sarah Giles and stunning set and costume design by Charles Davis and Renée Mulder.
Leading the cast is internationally celebrated Australian soprano Eleanor Lyons as Rusalka, alongside Rosario La Spina as the Prince and Eva Kong as the Duchess. The production also features the Queensland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Fanshil.
Whether you’re a longtime opera lover or simply after a unique cultural experience in Brisbane, Rusalka is shaping up to be one of the city’s standout performances this season.
