Gas Hound Kitchen & Bar
Newstead
Updated: Mar 17, 2026
Gas Hound Kitchen and Bar is where modern Australian bistro dining meets the action and thrills of a sports bar at Newstead's Gasworks Plaza.
The unique venue combines an elevated menu featuring flame-cooked dishes from a woodfired oven with a side of sports-themed fun, including electronic dart boards, pool tables and televised live sports.
The decor at Gas Hound Kitchen and Bar is an ode to modern Australian design with hardwood timbers, including eucalyptus, terracotta tiles, a pergola and lush greenery throughout, with planter boxes and flowering vines outside merging with the interior to create a seamless space.
The redesign of the space – which was formerly home to retro supper club Maggie May – is the work of Queensland-based Space Cubed Design Studio, the creative force behind lush venues Donna Chang and its sibling bar, Boom Boom Room, Fish Lane’s Southside and Soak Bathhouse at West Village.
As for the food, Gas Hound serves seriously good classic pub fare, taken to the next level with premium local ingredients and beautiful presentation. Everything in the kitchen is made from scratch, including hand-crumbing and pan-frying the chicken schnitzel while more than 50% of the dishes, including the steaks, are cooked over an open flame, ensuring a delicious smoky flavour.
Snacks include Shrimp Po Boy, chorizo, Manchego cheese & potato croquettes, popcorn tofu; dirty fries (mozzarella cheese, fried onions, jalapenos, pickles & gas hound sauce); and Barbacoa Tacos (chipotle slow cooked smoky brisket, chargrilled salsa verde, onion, coriander, cojita, crema & corn tortilla)
Handhelds (burgers) are melt-in-the-mouth, come served with seasoned fries & garlic mayo and include Gas Hound Smash (two smashed beef patties, American cheddar, grilled onion, pickles & gas hound sauce); Nashville Hot Honey (Southern fried chicken, Nashville hot honey, lettuce, pickles & aioli); and pan-fried haloumi with roquette leaves, sliced tomato, onion, chilli jam & aioli.
For mains there's a choice of Signature Parmis (classic, smoky maple, Italian or spicy); fish and chips or Eye Fillet or Rump Steak with a choice of sauces (cowboy butter, shiraz jus, chimichurri, creamy mushroom pepper or bourbon garlic cream).
Otherwise, there's Prawn Linguine, Baked Gnocchi alla Vodka and green or peach salads. And for dessert there's a choice of Chocolate Brownie (honeycomb, chocolate soil, shipped macadamia cream) or Peach Cobbler (peaches two ways, rosemary biscuit crumb & vanilla bean ice cream).
Gas Hound’s cocktail menu pairs premium spirits with modern twists on classic cocktails, perfectly complementing the venue’s high-energy atmosphere and refreshing dining experience.
Highlights include the punchy Sure Fire, a tropical, ginger-spiked Margarita, the crisp and savoury Steel Tip martini, and Deep Pocket, a rich, slow-sipping take on an Old Fashioned. There's also a handful of non-alcoholic and low alcohol cocktails including Lyre's Negroni, Blood Orange Spritz, Espresso Martini or watermelon & chilli Margarita.
Otherwise from the bar, there's a selection of 12 beers on tap (a mix of craft beer and standards like XXXX), three wines on tap, a comprehensive wine list featuring a mix of Australian and international wines and a variety of spirits.
Good to know - Dogs on leash are welcome on the outdoor covered terrace area.
Need to know - There is on-street parking available nearby (free on weekends) and undercover Woolworths carpark about 50m away on Longland St.
