Venner
West End
Updated: Mar 02, 2026
Venner is a charming Scandi-inspired restaurant located in an old West End cottage on the outskirts of Boundary St.
Combining Nordic discipline with carefully sourced Australian produce, Venner is from the folks behind city laneway bar, Milquetoast.
The inviting cosy restaurant, with polished timber floors and shelves of wine on the VJ'd walls, seats 40 inside and outside there is a bench facing the road with stool seating for eight.
Don't be fooled by the rustic setting because Venner serves a menu of exquisite food that blends Nordic influences with the best of Australian produce (carefully sourced), unlike anything to be found anywhere in Brisbane.
From the seasonal regularly changing set menu (served on beautiful handmade plates by Tony Rice), expect to find dishes like Iced cos heart with rock oyster green goddess & finger lime; and kangaroo pastrami with cultured cream amd fried onions.
More delectable bites include the likes of Pyengana cheddar and black walnut croustade; and Buckwheat cracker with Spanish mackeral, cucumber and horseradish.
Malted rye and seed sour dough is served with churned Jersey butter from Tommerups Dairy Farm, whilst more substantisl dishes include the likes of wild venison loin with cavalo nero & warrigal green sauce and braised lamb shoulder with rye waffle, preserved rosella & shiso salad.
Sweet offerings might include Buttermilk custard with fig leaf & ginger granita & honeycomb; and A la minute Madeleines with chamomlie cream. There is also the option for alcoholic oir non-alcoholic pairings.
The drinks menu is every bit as unique as the food menu, with Aquavit (Scandinavian version of gin, distilled with carraway seed, fennel, dill & mint and a touch of anise) featuring in both the signature cocktail list (Australian aquavit) and neat (a weekly revolving showcase from Scandinavia, Scotland & Tasmania) as an accompaniment to dishes.
There's also a rotating list of classic cocktails with aVenner twist, Amari, aperitifs & digestifs including Gammel Dansk, boutique spirits, one craft beer and non-alcoholic beer on tap and an eclectic wine list of Australian, NZ, Italian, Austrian, French and German wines. For non-drinkers there's a great concise selection of alcohol-free cocktails and liqueurs - ask for recommendations.
