Big Boy Bangkok

Big Boy Bangkok is a vibrant neonlit Thai restaurant in Newstead, like the hidden street food bars you find in the back streets of Bangkok, with decor inspired by 1950's-70's Thailand.

The ambient brick-walled interior features neon lights, hand-painted matchboxes and witty advertising, which adds character to the space with South-East Asian graphics, vintage textures and playful typography.

As for the food menu, it's a playful mix of street-style bites and elevated Bangkok favourites. Standouts include Miang Kham, scallop betel leaves with coconut, shallot and chilli; Tod Mun Pla, crispy fish cakes with sweet chilli and lime; and Kai Satay, spice-marinated chicken with Big Boy’s satay sauce.

Larger plates, which are designed for sharing, include Big Boy Khoa Pad, fried rice with Moreton Bay bug and spanner crab; Kaeng Massaman, a slow-cooked beef Massaman curry; and Pla Sam Rod, a crispy whole fish served with a vibrant three-flavour sauce.

Behind the bar, the cocktail list features the same playful, flavour-driven approach. Highlights include Thai Me Up, with tequila, agave, lemon and Thai basil; the Spicy Kathoey, with mango chilli gin, yuzu and lemongrass; and the signature Hey Big Boy, a tropical tiki-style mix of rums, lemongrass, passionfruit and guava.

Good to know - The name comes straight from the streets. In Bangkok, food vendors often call out “Hey Big Boy!” with humour and warmth to lure customers to their stalls.
