Steam Train Espresso

Red Hill

Updated: Jun 22, 2025

STEAM TRAIN ESPRESSO HAS BEEN REPLACED BY ARTHUR TERRACE COFFEE SHOP.

Steam Train Espresso is on the fast track to becoming a favourite with Red Hill locals and passers-by.

The old saying "good things come in small packages" definitely applies to this tiny suburban cafe. Although inside space is limited, the premises hve been very cleverly fitted out.

The front counter boasts recycled timber from a mansion in New Farm and a rustic breakfast bar nestles against a side wall, covered in wallpaper that imitates a lime-washed brick wall. Colourful seating completes this bright, airy and relaxed interior whilst outside, casual cane and timber settings - under the shade of an awning - beckon to those who like to watch the world go by.

Fonzie Abbott coffee (roasted locally at Albion) is served here and is proving to be very popular with those who know their beans. It is a beautiful smooth coffee that leaves no bitter aftertaste and should definitely be ordered by the "mugful".

A text ahead service is offered here, for the convenience of those on the run. Cold pressed coffee and Parker's organic juices (100% Australian owned) are stocked and delicious smoothies are made onsite.

A favourite at Steam Train Espresso is the healthy Chia Pod, whilst filled baguettes, wraps and fresh salads - all made onsite - are winners too. Breads, croissants, rolls and baguettes are sourced from Banneton Bakery.

For those with a sweet tooth, gluten free brownies, banana bread, and muffins (raspberry, blueberry and apple and cinnamon) are amongst the tempting offerings. Future plans for Steam Train Espresso include adding hot meals to the menu as the weather turns a little cooler.

Service here is timely and friendly, even on a busy day. Street parking is easy on Arthur Terrace, although this area can get busy in peak hour.

Wondering about the name? Dane says, "Steam Train was my nickname as a kid. I was kind of crazy and unstoppable!" The name does seem appropriate for a business that is travelling full steam ahead.

Need to know - Steam Train Espresso makes a great and handy stop-off point for a coffee, smoothie or healthy treat for parents with children en route to nearby Woolcock Park.
