Propel

Expressions Dance Company

Queensland’s premier contemporary dance company, Expressions Dance Company (EDC), will enthral audiences with their latest show, Propel, at the Judy.

The title is descriptive in more than one way, with the show propelling emerging local and international choreographers into the spotlight. Choreographers Lisa Wilson, Amy Hollingsworth and Elise May from Australia, and Xu Yiming from China will have their very differently styled works performed by the award-winning dancers of EDC.

Dance proponents might remember the first Propel, which was such a success that EDC have decided to repeat the exercise. Artistic Director, Natalie Weir, says that the intention is to provide an opportunity for Australian and international emerging and established choreographers to present work in a supportive environment.

Xu Yiming is having the chance to choreograph work though EDC’s China Australia Dance Exchange Project. His acclaimed solo, Waiting Alone, is an Australian premiere and redefines movement.

Lisa Wilson’s Hollow Lands, inspired by the sculptural light installation, Through Hollow Lands by Etta Lillienthal, examines the powerful feelings that surge through us when we come to the brink; while contemporary dance powerhouse Amy Hollingsworth’s Deeper Than Ink, explores how the depth of human relationships can mark you deeper than any tattoo.

Rounding out the amazing array of versatility and stylistic contrasts is Elise May’s Written on the Body, highlighting the power we each hold to determine who we let into our private world and how encounters change our future.

Need to know - Performances on Wednesday, 8 March, 11.30am and Thursday, 9 March, 7.30pm will feature a Q & A Forum.
