Peace And Quiet

Slq

Community-generated exhibition Peace and Quiet is a refreshingly relaxing and reflective series of events to visit at the State Library of Queensland throughout the summer.

Led by artists Elizabeth Woods and Kevin Leong, Peace and Quiet’s works explore personal, social and political ideas of peace which are especially relevant in the current climate of worldwide turmoil. Some works have been provided by members of the community who have lived through war and can therefore reflect on the absence of peace.

Acting State Librarian and CEO, Sonia Cooper, says of an exhibition highlight, Peaceful Landscapes: “Community members have shared their vision of a peaceful world by contributing peaceful landscape artworks that will be mounted over the First World War wallpaper in SLQ Gallery, providing a powerful reminder of what is lost in times of war.”

Some other highlights include:

Peaceful Protest – a collection of historical placards and banners used in protests and demonstrations by local peace groups and activists.

White on White – where community and cultural groups have been invited to remake their national flags in white as a gesture of peace, with the 12 flags flown in the gallery during the exhibition.

The Making of Peace (Mon 30 Nov – Wed 9 Dec) – Elders and community groups will hand-sew Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peace flags.

There’ll also be community performances and workshops where participants can create peace decorations to give as gifts for Christmas, Valentine’s Day or for no reason other than to give.

The exhibition is part of State Library’s Q ANZAC 100: Memories For a New Generation program and full details for Peace and Quiet can be found HERE
