Naga Thai

Brisbane CBD

NAGA THAI HAS CLOSED IN JULY 2022 DUE TO THE DEMOLITION OF EAGLE STREET PIER.

Naga Thai is a restaurant that has it all: a prime Brisbane CBD location, the work of renowned Brisbane restaurateur Andrew Baturo, with interiors by top designer Anna Spiro and a menu to match.

Perched atop Eagle St Pier, Naga Thai enjoys sweeping uninterrupted views of the Story Bridge, Howard Smith Wharves and Kangaroo Point cliffs, with the River Queen paddle steamer moored below.

The massive high-ceilinged curved space (which used to be occupied by Pony Dining) is given warmth and a sense of intimacy by a stunning cloud of paper lanterns which adorn the ceiling. Modernist-style furniture is complemented by colour touches from the 60's - bright orange, melon, lime green and cherry, and the retro-toned setting is backed by a soundtrack from early rock'n'roll to Motown.

A bustling open plan kitchen occupies one corner and to the left of the entrance a colourful library area provides a contrast to the main dining room and is the perfect separate spot for group gatherings. Outside on the wraparound balcony are a mix of dining tables and benches where diners can enjoy a pre-or-post-dinner drink whilst taking in the views.

A match for the setting, the menu is not your ordinary Thai offering, with a delectable array of dishes you won't find anywhere else in Brisbane. Fresh Queensland produce and Thai flavours come together to create new taste sensations derived from traditional dishes.

Here you'll find entrees such as Massaman Beef in a house-made milk bun with pickled cucumber and dipping sauce, Mt Tamborine free range chicken pandan parcels, spicy pork and jasmine rice balls or must-try flower dim sims (winter melon, raost peanut & sesame, fried garlic and caramelised chilli vinegar.

Stir fry choices include spicy goldband snapper, Mt Tamborine free range chicken or chilli Borrowdale pork while curries include the highly recommended fish dumpling green curry, coconut & turmeric valenca pork shoulder or vegetable panang curry.

Noodle dishes at Naga Thai are hard to resist - think Shark Bay tiger prawns with green mung bean noodles, char-grilled 150 day Rangers Valley beef sen-yai noodles or Moreton Bay Bug Pad Thai. Or try one of the rice dishes such as Blue Swimmer Crab jasmine rice or Hot & Sour fried brown rice.

For something light try one of the delectable salads such as braised banana blossom & poached free range chicken, e-saan char-grilled pork neck salad or DIY 'smashed' papaya salad. And to finish there's local cavendish banana fritters, chilli vodka dark chocolate mousse & ginger coconut sticky pudding to coconut & pandan leaf panna cotta.

To accompany there's a cracking curated wine list which is handily included inside the food menu and which would have to be Brisbane's easiest to choose from. All wines are described in three words, so whether you're a wine conoisseur or a novice you can easily find the wine for you. There's also a range of luscious Naga Iced Teas (think Yuzu & Grey, Chai Vanilla Shake or Lychee & Rose) which have the option of adding spirits to take them next level. Or go for one of the creative house cocktails like Plum Nagaroni, A Muddle of Melon or Pink Thaigarita.
