Muscle Memory

Judith Wright Centre

Muscle Memory is an exciting new work from Brisbane’s innovative music and dance ensemble, Collusion, at the Judith Wright Centre from Aug 17-20.

There are three group dance works on offer – Refraction, Transition Sequence and Urban Myths – and two intimate duets titled Mourning Song and Transference. Described as being chamber ballets, and featuring Queensland Ballet’s exciting pre-professional dancers, the works are all choreographed by Collusion’s resident choreographer, Gareth Belling. He says, “In re-staging the five works, we haven’t been precious about them. They aren’t dusty old museum pieces; they’re living, breathing organisms.”

Collusion’s Phillip Eames has written a dynamic score for Refraction, which takes a look at a spectrum of choices and individuals; Catherine Likhuta’s Sonata for Violin and Piano is the perfect complement to the delicacy of Transference; while Urban Myths unpacks the image of what looks to be a perfect marriage in sepia photographs. Also sure to be an exciting collaboration is Transference, set to acclaimed Australian composer, Carl Vine’s String Quartet No. 3.

Collusion’s Artistic Director, Ben Greaves, says that Muscle Memory “pushes the musicians and dancers to their limits. This is a season of lyrical, taut and virtuosic live music.”
