Mother

Ipswich Civic Centre

See one of Australia’s favourite actors, Noni Hazlehurst, play the challenging title role in Mother – a play written for her by Daniel Keene – at Ipswich Civic Centre on Thursday 20 October.

Presented by Ipswich Civic Centre and IF Theatre, Mother is a meaty part for the accomplished actor who’s well known to TV audiences from shows such as A Place To Call Home, City Homicide and way back to The Sullivans.

Hazlehurst plays Christy, a woman who’s been cast out of society and is living on the streets, attracting the curiosity of the locals in the area with her tales of her colourful, troubled life. Part of what she says is truth, part is fiction, and with her muddled mind she’s not sure which parts are which.

Mother also looks at the deeper elements behind those people who are homeless and sees their state as a metaphor for disconnection.

The play, by the award-winning playwright Daniel Keene (Boxman, Life Without Me, The Serpent’s Teeth), is directed by his long-time collaborator, Matt Scholten,  the Artistic Director and Creative Producer of independent theatre company, IF Theatre. In total, they’ve presented 12 plays by Keene.

It’s sure to be a tour de force one-woman show from Hazlehurst, with one critic calling her “simply mesmerising” in the role. The Age called the play “a haunted confronting work.”

Need to know: Mother is MA15+, recommended for a mature audience 15 years and over. Included in the ticket price is a free program and 'Meet & Greet' with the artists after the show.
