Malty Grain
Windaroo
MALTY GRAIN HAS CLOSED AS OF END 2017 BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY THEIR MT TAMBORINE CRAFTED BEERS AT THEIR BEARD & BRAU FARMHOUSE BREWERY.
Malty Grain is the latest incarnation of Windaroo Cottage, a Queenslander-style brick cottage located in Windaroo between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, serving locally brewed boutique beer and top-notch fare sourced from local producers.
With a rustic interior and beer garden deck, Malty Grain is owned by head brewer Chris Herring and his wife Tanya Harlow, to showcase beer crafted at their Beard & Brau Farmhouse Brewery in Tamborine Village.
There’s four brews on tap, like Margot (a mid-strength ale with reduced gluten) and Great Dane Tree porter (made with cacao and vanilla from the Daintree), plus a selection of bottled craft beers: Bon Chiens (French farmhouse ale), Black Snout (English style milk stout) and Double Red (Imperial amber ale).
Food on offer includes Spanish style tapas and share plates such as pinchos (tasty treats skewered onto toasted bread), spicy chicken wings and beef cheeks slow cooked in beer. Or try the recommended Farmer’s Plate, a mix of local artisan produce like chorizo, spiced cumin cheese, pickles, warm olives, smoked ham and sourdough.
For something more substantial, order chef’s Plate of the Day like Portuguese chicken with tomato rice or grain fed lamb with couscous salad. Chef also makes homemade daily desserts such as raspberry cheesecake and gluten-free chocolate brownies.
Besides beer, Malty Grain has ciders and a small curated wine list. Otherwise, there’s Moonshine Coffee - farmed, roasted and hand blended in Byron Bay - and Tamborine Tea.
Need to know - Follow Malty Grain's Facebook page for more information on their Sunday Sessions showcasing local musicians.
Nice to know - Malty Grain also doubles as a function venue, with onsite chapel, and is available for weddings and/or special events.
