LUCID SWEETS HAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Lucid Sweets is a charming little al fresco dessert café and bakery located in a retro shopping strip opposite Geebung Railway Station.

The house specialty at Lucid Sweets is heavenly meringues, which are, quite simply, the best in Brisbane and worth a trip to Geebung to sample. Owner Sarah has perfected her niche craft over many years, before launching a popular stall at Eat Street Markets, with demand so great it led to the opening of this café and wholesale shop.

The meringues are as light as a feather, with luscious melt-in-the-mouth filling and are the centrepiece of the delicious dessert dishes as well as being available singularly in ‘kiss’ or ‘cloud’ size, or as gorgeous gift boxes to take away.

Meringue flavours, which are seasonal, include coconut, chocolate, passionfruit and raspberry, and no trip here is complete without trying them in the desserts. As well as the Berry Eton Mess (vanilla bean meringue kisses with fresh raspberry coulis, Norco cream and fresh raspberries) highly recommended is the Sweet Jude: raspberry and passionfruit meringue kisses with George Greek yoghurt, fresh passionfruit and raspberries and organic toasted coconut flakes.

Two other desserts – Afternoon Turkish Delight and ‘Straight to the Thighs’ are also must tries, with the former rosewater and pistachio meringue kisses served with Norco cream, fresh raspberries, pistachios and rose petals and the latter an indulgence of Belgian chocolate meringue kisses with a dollop of Nutella, crumbled Chocolate covered honeycomb, pure cream and fresh banana.

Otherwise there’s the option of a design your own Mini-Mess – a choice of 2 meringue kisses (bubblegum, raspberry, coconut, passionfruit, vanilla bean or chocolate) with a choice of sauce (berry or passionfruit coulis, chocolate or salted caramel) and topping (toasted coconut, hunders and thousands or crushed chocolate).

While sweet stuff is the main drawcard, Lucid Sweets is also a good spot for a savoury bite to eat for breakfast or lunch, with a range of Bagel Boys bagels (Ham and Dijon, New Yorker with lox or Chicken Pesto and Rocket), fresh or toasted, to eat-in or take away as well as ham and cheese croissants, muesli and yoghurt cup or fruit and yoghurt with raspberry crush.

Coffee served here is well-brewed Genovese and tea is loose leaf Madura, otherwise there’s Emma and Tom’s Juices or bottled water.

Need to know – All seating is outside on the charming little terrace and takeaway orders from the window while the inside of Lucid Sweets premises is where all the baking and wholesaling operations happen, as well as catering for functions such as themed birthdays, weddings and so forth.

Nice to know - Sarah takes care to source her ingredients locally and from small producers where possible, with raspberries from the McGruddy family farm in the Moreton bay region and other fruit from the Rocklea markets along with farm fresh free-range eggs, while cream and milk comes from Norco, a dairy farm established in Byron Bay area in 1895 and still operating as a dairy co-op. Yoghurt is from Queensland made George’s Greek Yoghurt and tea is Madura Tea – established in 1978 on the outskirts of Murwillumbah by 3rd generation tea planter Michael Grant-Cooke.
