Locate15 S.t.e.m. Education Program

Bcec

Do you have a plan for a zombie apocalypse? Well, that’s if one should transpire. If you’ve always thought one should prepare for such a contingency then pop yourself along to the S.T.E.M. Education Program at the Locate15 Conference, taking place in the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 10 March from 10am to 5pm. There’ll be plenty of other thought-provoking topics on hand as well.

The conference itself is designed to energise the location industry and drive greater awareness and innovation of spatial technologies. There are several guest speakers attending, with the Honorary Malcolm Turnbull MP giving the Opening Address.

Locate15 and Destination Spatial are looking forward to welcoming students, teachers and anyone else with a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to the Exhibition Open Day. They’re encouraging students and teachers from primary level to university to engage with the Destination Spatial S.T.E.M. Education Program. Walk-ins are welcome but it would be wise to book in advance if you’re bringing along a group.

Locate15 Conference Brisbane

Topics guaranteed to get the grey matter exercised include: An Introduction to Queensland Globe; Neighbourhood safety; How hazard ready should you be?; Landscapes in the Australian curriculum Year 8: QTopo – Queensland’s online topographic mapping tool; Should we build the next amusement park on your street?: and of course the must-attend subject – Your Z Day plan? Preparing for a zombie apocalypse.

Locate15 has been developed to inspire people working within the industry as well as young people interested in the related subjects, and Queensland’s Department of Natural Resources and Mines has recently hired a spatial educator to develop lesson plans designed to motivate young people to consider careers in Spatial, and to assist teachers in bringing the type of content to students. Mick Law has developed and delivered the program, and with 15 years involvement with geospatial program in schools, he obviously knows his stuff. He’s now Senior Project Officer for the Queensland Spatial Information Council, Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Queensland.

Destination Spatial is an industry initiative to promote spatial careers and you’ll be able to find a stand about it at the conference. If you or someone you know are interested in that type of career, check it out for some valuable advice.
