Joh For Pm

Brisbane Powerhouse

Goodness gracious, Joh for PM is a piping hot new musical comedy opening on 7 July at Brisbane Powerhouse!

Like pumpkin scones, Joh Bjelke-Petersen’s reign as Queensland Premier in the ‘80s brings either fond memories or gastric reflux to anyone old enough to remember. Either way a recipe that combines the fervent political landscape of the Joh and Flo era with musical comedy has to be a sure-fire treat.

Funny man and formerly one half of Lano and Woodley, Colin Lane will no doubt have a hoot playing Joh, and there’s also Chloe Dallimore, Kurt Phelan, Stephen Hirst and Simon Burvill-Homes. Music and lyrics are by Broadway composer, Paul Hodge (Clinton: The Musical), and the script is by award winning Brisbane-based playwright Stephen Carlton (The Narcissist, Bastard Territory).  Kris Stewart directs.

A co-production between Cairns-based JUTE Theatre Company, Brisbane Powerhouse and Queensland Music Festival, Joh for PM will take audiences on a musical and hilarious romp through the life and times of the Queensland icon who set state politics alight.

Katie Noonan, Queensland Music Festival Artistic Director, notes that in the ‘80s in Queensland, making art and having diverse political opinions was an act of genuine anarchy. She’s excited that that spirit comes alive in this new production.

The score moves through the era from the delights of disco to the gloriously tacky ‘80s. Expect songs with titles of Joh’s favourite sayings, like Feed the Chooks and Don’t You Worry About That, as well as Pumpkin Diplomacy!

You will seriously enjoy this night out - don’t you worry about that!

Nice to know - Joh for PM will tour to Cairns later in the year.
