Qut Gardens Theatre

Fans of the movie, Florence Foster Jenkins, can enjoy a joyous live version of the true story of the ‘world’s worst opera singer’, with Glorious playing at QUT Gardens Theatre from 12 – 13 September.

Even if you haven’t seen the great Meryl Streep horribly warble her way through the film (which was inspired by the play) as the delusional singer enabled by her husband, there’s plenty to love in the incredible true story.

Peter Quilter wrote the West End smash hit, with this Australian production starring well-known TV and theatre performer, Diana McLean, in the lead role. She’s joined by Mitchell Roberts (Cosme McMoon) and Felicity Soper (Dorothy), with the play being directed by Denny Lawrence.

The story takes place in 1940s New York, where Jenkins became a popular performer thanks to her flamboyant costumes and exuberant performances. The only problem was that she could hardly sing a note in tune! It was this delusional self-belief that made her a cult figure among celebrities and the city’s elite, culminating in her recording an excruciating album and giving a triumphant concert at Carnegie Hall.

It’s definitely a tale where fact is stranger than fiction and is sure to have plenty of heartwarming laughs as Jenkins’ enabling husband, for various reasons, is determined to make all her dreams come true.
