Gateaux Café & Dessert in Hawthorne’s leafy cinema precinct is a gorgeous Euro-chic café, patisserie and dessert bar serving all manner of baked and sweet treats, gelato and more.

The beautifully designed sleek white interior features pale wood bentwood café chairs, vintage powder blue padded banquettes, a shell chandelier, hessian vases on tables and shelves of teapots and cookie jars, while the glass cabinet is packed with temptations such as Mille Feuille, flourless chocolate cake, luscious lemon meringue, caramel and fruit tartlets, eclairs, muffins, croissants, raspberry cheesecakes, apple tarts and quiches.

On the counter are decorative china high tea stands of macarons and plates of Danish pastries and escargots while cake stands contain daily premise-baked cakes such as Carrot Cake, Banana Loaf and fragrant Lemon Cake, along with baskets of baguettes.

There’s also a mini gelati bar, with artisan Italian ice-cream made with no added colourings or flavourings by a local Brisbane family in delectable flavours like pistachio, premium dark chocolate, nutty hazel and vanilla bean.

On the dine-in menu are all of the above, as well as Waffles with maple syrup, melted chocolate or salted caramel sauce and ice-cream and savoury choices like quiche and salad, fresh cut sandwiches and the house specialty Cheese platters featuring Gateaux’s own cheese balls, dried figs, blue cheese and walnut, feta cheese and chives and crackers.

Gateaux serves excellent coffee, an interesting variety of teas (including Ceylon Bop Decaf, Black Spiced Chai, Berries of the Forest and Vanilla Chai Latte) and Milkshakes (think oreo, mixed berry, strawberry and Nutella), fresh orange juice and top Smoothies (including Triple Berry Kiss, Strawberry banana and Mango banana Chia Seed).

Even the soft drinks are out of the ordinary, with a Joia range with flavours like Blackberry, Pomegranate and Ginger and Pineapple, Coconut and Nutmeg.

Nice to know – There are also Kids Milkshakes and high chairs available.
