Franck Gohier: Dirty Deeds

Mitchell Fine Art

Comic book and Film Noir meet art gallery in Frank Gohier: Dirty Deeds, a contemporary art exhibition at Mitchell Fine Art, May 30 – June 23.

The Darwin-based, French-born artist had a major retrospective exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory recently, and now Dirty Deeds showcases new works with references to comic book characters and Film Noir.

Frank Gohier: Dirty Deeds Mitchell Fine Art

“In this latest body of work, Dirty Deeds, I delve into some of the slightly darker sides of humanity that piqued my interest via detective comics and Film Noir aesthetics,” says Gohier, who notes that most comic books are marketed at young men so he created a lot of imagery that centres around strong, empowered women characters.

“I use nostalgic comic book imagery and vintage colour palettes to portray and hark back to attitudes or events that happened in the past,” he says. “I then exhibit them in a present, contemporary context… to express that beliefs and mindsets that transpired previously are doomed to repeat themselves in the present and the future.”

Gohier has an extensive portfolio as a painter, sculptor and printmaker, with his artwork being steeped in his political and social consciousness. His work is a reflection of society and its faults, frailties and triumphs.

Need to know - Dirty Deeds’ official Opening Night is on Friday, June 1 from 6pm – 8pm. Artist Franck Gohier will be present and will also give an Artist Talk in the gallery on Saturday, June 2 from 2pm.
