Tosca
Lyric Theatre, QPAC
Explore the romance and tragedy of one of greatest operas of them all, Tosca, performed by Opera Queensland for 5 shows only from June 13 to June 22 at QPAC.
Based on a French play, La Tosca, Giacomo Puccini's operatic thriller is a melodramatic piece depicting lust, betrayal and cold-blooded murder.
For this new production, Opera Queensland's Artistic Director Patrick Nolan, brings Tosca into a post-modern era set in 1970's Rome. The top end of town is abuzz with fame and fashion but beneath the surface, political and religious tensions have reached boiling point.
Tosca's all-star cast includes New York-based Australian soprano, Rachelle Durkin, as the famous opera singer Tosca, together with Angus Wood as Tosca's lover Cavaradossi, and José Carbó as the tyrannical Chief of Police Scarpia; in a world brought to life by Tony Award-nominated designer Dale Ferguson.
According to Artistic Director Patrick Nolan "Tosca is a rip-roaring thriller that embraces the grand themes of the human spirit and features Puccini’s most beautiful music.”
In a world of political tyranny and widespread intolerance, Tosca offers a timeless plea for artistic and political freedom.
