Rite of Spring

Playhouse, QPAC

Rite of Spring is the must-see new interpretation of Stravinsky’s revolutionary ballet of sacrifice and renewal from China’s superstar choreographer and dancer Yang Liping, making its Australian premiere at QPAC from September 25 to 28.

Returning to Brisbane Festival following the success of her spectacular work, Under Siege, Rite of Spring brings together an international creative team including Oscar-winning designer Tim Yip and 15 dancers.

Inspired by Chinese and Tibetan symbols of nature, Liping creates a preface and a coda framing Stravinsky’s instantly recognisable music as the second of three sections - Incantation, Sacrifice and Renewal. Parts I and III feature an original musical score from Chinese composer He Xuntian, influenced by traditional Tibetan music.

In this radical Rite, the Chosen One willingly gives herself for the good of the community, journeying from terror and doubt to knowledge, empowerment and reincarnation.

A household name in her native country, Yang Liping has won huge international acclaim for her extravagant, breathtakingly visual dance works, blending Chinese aesthetics and modern expression in a distinctively personal movement language.
