Patrick Tjungurrayi: Kallianku

Mitchell Fine Art

Kallianku is a must-see aboriginal art exhibition featuring 17 spectacular artworks by internationally recognised Aboriginal artist Patrick Tjungurrayi, showing at Mitchell Fine Art from June 26 to July 20.

Patrick Tjungurrayi: Kallianku

Shown for the first time in it’s entirety, Kallianku celebrates the artist's deep-rooted connection to his traditional homeland and his innate artistic talent with vibrant interpretations of the harsh Australian desert.

Born in one of the most remote corners of Australia’s central desert region circa 1935, Tjungurrayi grew up living a traditional lifestyle before wandering in to the recently established Balgo Mission in the 1940’s.

Revered for his knowledge of lore and country, he was the custodian for ceremonies and country between Balgo, Kiwirrkurra and Kintore. His paintings focused on the mythical Tingari stories that explain the creation of sacred sites and stories throughout his country, Kallianku.

Sadly, Tjungurrayi passed away in 2017 but his legacy lives on through his bold and colourful depictions of his homeland.
