Explore Brisbane's Backyards

There's no better time to get out and explore Brisbane’s backyards. Brisbane City Council is creating more to see and do, and delivering more opportunities to enjoy Brisbane's beautiful sunny and mild winter climate. From markets, art and heritage walking trails to Botanic Gardens and environmental centres, everyone can enjoy the city’s abundance of hidden gems and beautiful climate.

Markets

Brisbane’s many markets are the perfect place to shop for original products, pre-loved clothing, fresh food and produce.

Look for bargain buys in art, fashion and jewellery at a Suitcase Rummage or the weekly Riverside at the Gardens Markets. Or arm yourself with a coffee and take your pick from gnocchi, dumplings, baked goods and other tasty treats before filling your bags with fresh fruit and vegetables, jams and small goods from the Jan Powers Farmers Markets at Powerhouse, Manly or Mitchelton or the weekly Wednesday Brisbane City Markets.

Walks

From public art trails to heritage trails, talk a walk on one of Brisbane's many walking trails to explore a part of the city you haven’t seen before.

Take a trip down memory lane on one of Council's 18 suburban heritage trails, where you can learn about the suburbs’ rich histories and discover hidden gems, places and monuments that have helped shaped Brisbane. Then take the time to enjoy and admire public art with four themed art trails, focusing on Brisbane’s contemporary art and architecture, cultural heritage and the Brisbane River. And take a stroll through the CBD to explore the amazing contemporary artworks on display in Council’s Outdoor Gallery, which transforms Brisbane’s laneways and streets into imaginative and engaging spaces.

Botanic Gardens
Explore BNE backyard

An exploration of Brisbane isn’t complete without a trip to one of the city’s premier outdoor spaces, the City Botanic Gardens or the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha.

Take a guided stroll through beautiful landscapes by trained volunteers, visit a range of attractions, including Japanese gardens, ornamental ponds, a Hide ‘n’ Seek Children’s Trail and historical monuments, or simply enjoy a picnic with family and friends while enjoying Brisbane’s beautiful climate.

Environment Centres
Explore BNE Backyards

Brisbane City Council has three environment centres at Boondall Wetlands, Downfall Creek and Karawatha Forest. Each natural area is unique and provides ample opportunities for visitors to explore Brisbane's natural habitat.

Here you can participate in free or low-cost activities such as guided walks, workshops, interactive displays, canoeing and wildlife watching. Then relax under sheltered picnic tables and barbecues or play in natural habitat playgrounds and place spaces.
