Carlos Barrios: Undefined Dreams

Mitchell Fine Art

Central American figurative artist, Carlos Barrios, explores the undefinable nature of dreams in his solo exhibition Undefined Dreams, showing at Mitchell Fine Art from May 29 until June 22.

This series of contemporary artwork blurs the realms of consciousness and unconsciousness, as the artist tries to capture the elusive images that have come to him in a dreamlike state.

Born in El Salvador, Barrios has made Australia his home for over 20 years; recently relocating with his family, dogs, cat and chickens to Currumbin on the Gold Coast. No wonder his art is filled with visions of people, animals, coastal and pastoral scenes.

Working emotively, Barrios has no preconceived ideas of what an artwork will look like until it has finished. This exhibition celebrates the artist's process as much as the subject.

“I dispose myself before a blank piece and let it come - colours and shapes, lines and dots. Each piece takes on a life of its own. The process is quite an enjoyable one – but not without moments of doubt. The imaginary takes shape and follows a pattern that sometimes remains a mystery, even to its creator" he explains.

It's this wonderful freedom of expression for which Barrios is known and he is passionate to continue discovering.

Undefined Dreams opens on Saturday, June 1 at 3pm with the artist in attendance.
