Arthur Boyd: Landscape of the Soul
Ipswich Art Gallery
Arthur Boyd: Landscape of the Soul is a must-see major exhibition of one of Australia's most significant artists, showing at Ipswich Art Gallery from May 26 until August 18.
This fascinating free exhibit, part of a three-year national tour organised by Bundanon Trust, is the only showing in South East Queensland and quite a coup for Ipswich Art Gallery.
Featuring more than 60 artworks of Boyd's, including a selection of masterpieces borrowed from major state and national art museums (such as works from the striking Nebuchadnezzar series), Landscape of the Soul presents a rare opportunity for Queenslanders to appreciate the complex genius of this national treasure.
A leading Australian painter of the late 20th century, Boyd's works range from impressionist renderings of Australian landscape to stark expressionist figurative paintings. This extraordinary exhibit explores a lifetime of Boyd’s artwork.
A number of never-before-seen works created by Boyd as a teenager will provide the first in-depth look at the artist’s early grasp of landscape as a subject. The exhibition is bookended by Boyd’s youthful paintings of the Mornington Peninsula in the 1930's, and the final phase of his career depicting the Shoalhaven on New South Wales' south coast in the 1970's.
In addition, Queensland audiences will have the rare chance to see a selection of Boyd’s personal letters and sketchbooks, offering an insight into his life and work, his motivations and anxieties.
