The Young King
Cremorne Theatre, QPAC
One of Oscar Wilde’s best-kept-secret stories, The Young King, comes to life on stage with a flawless fusion of whimsical theatre and audience participation at QPAC from July 23 to 27.
The Young King is a magical tale adapted for stage by award-winning playwright Nicki Bloom and directed by Andy Packer, Artistic Director of internationally acclaimed Adelaide-based theatre company Slingsby.
This must-see piece of immersive theatre is a fantastically fun show for the young and young at heart. As soon as audiences enter the theatre, they will be thrust into the ethereal world of the Young King, cast as people of the kingdom. The surprises continue until the end of the show.
First published as part of a collection of short stories under the name The House of Pomegranates, The Young King tells the tale of a boy born to a princess and a poor woodland man. Snatched from his parents as a baby, the Young King is raised by a kindly goatherd in a deep forest, until one day he is discovered to be heir to the kingdom.
One of Oscar Wilde's lesser-known works, The Young King employs his trademark beautiful and tender language.
According to Director Andy Packer, the story is a wonderful combination of hope, loss, death and new beginnings that will challenge the audience and encourage them to find their own path and stand their ground.
Need to know - The Young King is recommended for children 8 years+ and adults.
