This one time head office of NAB was designed by colonial architect FDG Stanley (of Queensland Club fame) in the grand classical style of the boom times of the year it was built - 1885. Today this sandstone monolith remains intact inside and out, with, aside from its handsome Corinthian-column dominated façade, an opulent glass-roofed banking chamber that is worth stepping inside to see.
Another internal feature is the 1890 lift with a surrounding staircase as well as the World War I Honour Boards depicting the names of lost employees which still grace each side of the entry to the main chamber.
Even furniture selected in the UK by the bank’s first manager, Colonel Drury, in 1883-84 is still in use on the upper administrative floors.
