Grandma's Kiwi Kitchen

Waterford West

GRANDMA'S KIWI KITCHEN AT WATERFORD WEST HAS CLOSED PERMANENTLY.

Grandma’s Kiwi Kitchen is a bright funky oasis of delectable NZ-inspired food tucked away off a main thoroughfare in Waterford West.

With one other outlet in Springwood which has proved a hit with homesick kiwis and local foodies, this Grandma’s Kiwi Kitchen is also well worth a detour off the M1, for it is one of Logan’s real hidden treasures.

Ambience at Grandma’s is cool nana meets country vintage with comfy couches, crocheted rugs, lace tablecloths and bright embroidered cushions, local art for sale on the walls and a smattering of kiwi artefacts, décor pieces and accessories.

Charming appearance aside, Grandma’s Kiwi Kitchen is a must visit for its delicious premise-made food (everything here is made from scratch), a mix of New Zealand favourites and Oz café staples and its warm genuine hospitality.

On the all-day breakfast menu the usual Avo on Toast, Bacon and Eggs and Eggs Benny are complemented by Kiwi classics like the Kina (Chatham Island sea urchin) on Toast or Buttered or Fried Bread, and the highly recommended Whitebait Omelette/Fritter or Patty.

Those with a real hearty appetite can go for the GKK Vege Breakfast (sweetcorn fritter, spinach, roast pumpkin, avo, pan-fried kumera, potato, haloumi and egg) or the Kiwi Breakfast (2 eggs, pan-fried kumera and potato, mushroom, sausage, grilled tomato and toasted Turkish bread).

The rest of the All-Day Menu includes a whole host of NZ faves such as the Boil Up  - a traditional NZ hot pot of bacon bones, potato, kumera, watercress and motu motu (dough boys) with house made bread; Flounder and Eggs – NZ Yellow Belly with 2 eggs, chips and lemon; The Grandpaua Burger - Chatham Island paua fritter (housemade) with tomato, lettuce, red onion and creamed paua sauce on a toasted bun, served with kumara chunks and the all-round classic Fush and Chups – NZ Hoki fillet battered, crumbed or oven baked, with chips.

From the Sides and Starters, there’s the signature Auntie’s Mussels (NZ green lip mussels steamed in white wine, cream and garlic and served with garlic bread), Battered Mussels, Paua Fritters and the must try Paua Puff (Delicious creamed paua on golden fried bread).

And that’s not where it ends. Behind the counter are fresh wholesome daily salads, lasagne, raw and vegan slices and Kiwis will rejoice at the sight of traditional Louise Cake (with home-made short cake base and raspberry jam and coconut), Ginger Crunch, Coconut Rough and Afghan Biscuits, while a serve-yourself table of cakes and slices features the ionic Kiwi sweet Lolly Log.

The New Zealand flavour continues into the drinks list, with milkshakes based on NZ’s The Longest Drink in Town syrups, with flavours such as creaming soda, spearmint, lime, caramel and banana.

Meanwhile Smoothies include the Feijoa Frappe (feijoa puree, banana, apple juice and ice), Chai Spiced Banana, Berrylicious and Green Meanie (kale, spinach, apple juice etc). In addition there’s GKK’s luscious Iced Chocolate and Coffee.

Coffee is well-brewed di Manfredi’s Classic Blend and there’s also a great range of loose leaf Pickwick teas available (tip: try the French Earl Grey).

Grandma’s Kiwi Kitchen is also a great place to bring the kids, with plenty of space for prams, high chair available and a Kids Menu (Ham and cheese Toastie with Chips, Egg with Soldier Toasts and a special Kids Fush (buttered or crumbed) & Chups for those aged 12 and under. And to drink there’s a range of Kids Milkshakes or Spiders.
