Fronted by a shuttered black roller door on Brunswick St, the funky Quentin Tarantino-themed bar has its entry at the rear of California Lane, up a short flight of stairs and through a red London phone box-style door. The mystery doesn't end there though, with more secrets and clues awaiting fans inside.
Step inside past the Kill-Bill artworks to find a stunning black dim lit room that could be the bar version of QT's mind, framed with red and gold lighting. Take a seat at the bar or along the mirrored wall and get set to can indulge in some exquisite Japanese-Texan fusion bar food and cocktails true to the bar's theme.
In a nod to the respective chapters of Tarantino's two-film opus, the delectable bar menu is divided into Volume 1 (food) , Vol 2 (drinks) and Volume 1 credits (a sweet alcohol-infused dessert combo) , complemented by a secret unwritten menu that has its clues hidden around the bar.
The entire menu is an ode to phrases, scenes and characters from Kill Bill, from Sofie fatale skin-on fries, Bill's pork belly bao and Vernita greens to Boss Tanaka Potsstickers (homemade brisket potstickers, ponzu sauce & micro-coriander), Arigato Hanzo Kingfish (iced kingfish sashimi, coconut, lime, chilli, green oil & herbs),and Schultz Shroom bao (crispy enoki mushroom, char sui & Asian salad steamed bao).
Some standouts include the Yellow Kawasaki corn 'ribs' (charred corn quarter 'ribs', butter miso, Asian herbs, chilli, lime & sesame), Dine Like a Wagyu Samurai (charcoal grilled MB6+ score marble wagyu, caramelized onion-miso soubise & charred green onion) or Gogo Open Prawn Sandos (prawn, spiced mayo slaw, cos + chives and crouton open sando).
For 'Credits' you get to enjoy a fried custard bun, cinnamon sugar and ice-cream (Kaboom bun 'Surprise Inside') and/or a BB (mini waffle cone, gelato, Baileys + Jameson Shooter).
Volume 2 (the cocktail list) also pays homage to the films, with choices like Truth Serum Fizz (butter vodka, peach puree, apple juice, passionfruit & yellow flower), Pretty Rikki (butterfly pea gin, lavender and sour mix, shaken & double strained) or Pai Mei's revenge (campari, sweet vermouth, gin, ice sphere, orange skin over ice) - "What did you say to Pai Mei for him to take out your eye?"
