Parts of Brisbane will be brought to life with eye-catching street art during May, thanks to Brisbane City Council's Brisbane Canvas program.

This year, six outdoor locations across the city fringe and suburbs will be transformed into vibrant and innovative public art spaces. The 2019 Brisbane Canvas artists include both local and national talent, each having been selected for their high quality art practice and experience in delivering large scale artworks. Keep an eye out at:

  • Breakfast Creek Road, Bowen Hills
  • Pickering Street, Gaythorne
  • Dock Street, South Brisbane
  • Lutwyche Road, Windsor
  • Mains Road, Sunnybank
  • Moggill Road, Bellbowrie.

The 2018-19 program has also already seen local artists Cezary Stulgis and Benjamin Reeve commissioned to deliver a vibrant mural at the Bracken Ridge BMX facility.

The new artworks will add to Brisbane’s growing collection of contemporary public art. Avid street art spotters can see existing Brisbane Canvas artworks at several locations including:

  • Windsor Road, Red Hill
  • Macquarie Street, Teneriffe
  • View Street, Annerley
  • Moggill Road, Pinjarra Hills
  • Walker Street, Taringa
  • Arch Lane, CBD.

Brisbane Canvas is just one of Council’s many offerings of public art in the city. Residents and visitors are invited to think beyond traditional art galleries and dive beneath Brisbane’s surface to discover laneways and city streets transformed into imaginative, curious and engaging spaces. Look around to find hidden gems as part of the Outdoor Gallery exhibition program, including light boxes, banners and evening projections on Brisbane’s iconic William Jolly Bridge and in Edward Street’s high end fashion precinct. Check out Council’s website to see the Outdoor Gallery locations across Brisbane.

The Brisbane Street Art Festival, sponsored by Council, is Australia’s biggest celebration of urban art and this year it runs from 4-19 May, with five young local street artists mentored and supported as they design and paint a mural in the bike tunnel on Boundary Road in Indooroopilly. Artworks will also be painted in the Campbell Street underpass in Bowen Hills, Ivory Lane in Fortitude Valley and the Wharf Street tunnel in the city.

Need to know - There’s plenty of opportunity to explore art in Brisbane during May, with Council’s public art program including the Indigenous Art Program at locations across Brisbane and Botanica: Contemporary art outside, in the City Botanic Gardens. Council also has an extensive permanent public art collection of more than 190 artworks located through the city and surrounding suburbs.

Nice to know - There’s also loads of art activities happening all year round - check out Council’s website for these, the Outdoor Gallery locations and the Public Art Collection.
