Grumpy Madam
Newstead
GRUMPY MADAM HAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
Grumpy Madam is a hip, inner-city café perched on the corner of Evelyn and Byres Streets in Newstead serving breakfast, lunch and boutique coffee.
The concise all-day breakfast menu is well-thought out with a good balance of sweet and savoury dishes. Sweet tooths will be satiated with Fruit and Nut toast (seasonal fruit and lemon ricotta drizzled with honey on Danny's sourdough ) and blueberry hotcakes served with blueberry ‘nice-cream' and violet meringue.
Savoury options include Grumpy Muffin (English muffin with grilled ham, fried egg and melted cheese), Scotch egg served with tea smoked salmon, korma mayo and lime, and Horta - a Greek-inspired dish of sautéed greens, lemon, feta, fried egg and salted nuts.
Lunch, served from 11-1:30, ranges from soft blue tacos filled with beef short rib and Chinese slaw to lamb burgers with feta and fava on milk buns, and Korean-style bibimbap – poached chicken, wild rice, edamame, cured yolk and blanched greens. In addition, there’s a display case filled with gourmet sandwiches and fresh salads for take-away or dine-in.
Coffee on pour is by Blackboard Coffee, a Gold Coast boutique coffee outfit. Otherwise, there’s organic Sri Lankan Chamellia loose leaf teas, Hrvst St cold-pressed juices, kombucha and zero sugar, 100% natural Famous Sodas (ginger beer, pink lemonade and blood orange).
