The Tivoli Drive-In Theatre, a 40 minute drive from Brisbane’s CBD or 7 minutes from Ipswich, offers families an affordable night of old-fashioned fun underneath the stars.
Popular during the 70’s, drive-ins slowly fell out of favour and developers took over. The Tivoli, one of South East Queensland’s last remaining drive-ins was rescued when the Rivers of Life Christian Church purchased the land and re-opened the iconic drive-in.
And after being closed for 8 weeks, The Tivoli reopens on Saturday night the 23rd of May with strict COVID-19 regulations in place (including contactless ticket and food purchase, distance between cars etc) with a family-friendly double feature: SONIC the Hedgehog at 6.30pm, followed by Playing with Fire at 8.30pm.
Every Saturday night, the church screens two of the latest family blockbusters back to back on the big screen (32m X 16m). The drive-in also boasts a new cinema projector, rated in the Guinness Book of Records as the brightest cinema projector in the world.
The gates open at 4pm, with the first film starting at 6:30 or 7pm (depending on the time of year). Pre-movie entertainment includes market stalls and free jumping castle for the kids; there’s also a children’s playground.
An on-site café sells hot dogs, burgers, fish and chips as well as lollies, popcorn and hot and cold drinks – like hot chocolate and ice-cream spiders. The café, run as a social enterprise business, provides training and jobs for the unemployed. 100% of the Tivoli’s profit goes back into the community.
Nice to know – all are welcome at the Tivoli including four-legged, furry family members (on leash).
Need to know - Gates open 4pm. Market Stalls & Cafe from 4pm.
