Ipswich Art Gallery

Ipswich

As one of the most visited regional art galleries in Queensland the Ipswich Art Gallery, which is set in a handsome heritage building that was once the Town Hall, attracts some 80,000 visitors per year. And for good reason.

This visual and arts history museum hosts an ever changing quality programme of both heritage displays and exhibitions along with complementary performances, workshops and family friendly interactive activities.

Also included in the Ipswich Art Gallery is a fantastic dedicated kids exhibition and activity area and a must see space that showcases both the city’s long held heritage and contemporary works that reflect the city’s history. Highlights of the permanent collection include works by revered Queensland artists Vida Lahey, William Robinson (Chookyards), Margaret Olley and Ipswich's own Davida Allen, along with Christopher Trotter, Maxwell Spencer Dupain and Patricia Piccinini.

Interestingly the gallery has its own colourful history, having started off in the foyer of the old Town Hall in 1951, then in 1980 was relocated to the former St Paul’s Young Men’s Hall wherein it appointed its first professional Gallery Director in 1985. Then, aided by donations and community consultations the gallery relaunched in 1999 in the beautifully restored space back in the Old Town Hall.

Note that as well as the opportunity to browse independently, the gallery offers guided group tours of the permanent and temporary exhibitions.
