Brisbane's Tip Shops

Once upon a time in Brisbane, visits to the local tip were a weekend ritual and a paradise for fossickers and kids looking for buried treasure. Cars would pull up with trailers of 'junk' to pile onto the tip whilst others went to search for what they could uncover and salvage.

Today the tips have been replaced by Tip Shops, with one on Brisbane's northside and one on the south. At these Brisbane City Council owned depots, all of the real trash has been discarded and the stuff worth salvaging cleaned up and placed where it is easy to find, at a price that you won't find elsewhere. The thrill of never knowing what you might find is still there, from a vintage bicycle to an old dresser or retro toy, without the grottiness of the original tips:

Note that with COVID-19 Regulations in place, limited customers are allowed inside a Tip Shop at any one time.

Those who can be bothered taking the old Archerfield airport route to Acacia Ridge on weekends will be rewarded with this wonderland of reusable junk.
