Fox & Rabbit Coffee Co

Paddington

Fox & Rabbit has been replaced by Milo & Maisie Coffee Co

The Fox and Rabbit Coffee Co is a charming funky Nanna style café found tucked away on a Paddington ridge top, that serves superb coffee (unlike Nanna) and a delicious all day breakfast until after dark.

Sofa and seating inside the Fox and Rabbit cafe

Indeed a visit to Fox and Rabbit Coffee Co is like dropping into Gran’s place – scrambled eggs for dinner, herb pots and retro patio furniture on the pavement, by the front door is a  ‘front parlour’ nook of olive velveteen couch and comfy arm chair with lamp and occasional tables, the striking cafe counter* looks like part of a dresser that every postwar Nan had in her kitchen, and Satchmo and Dean Martin can be heard in the background.

Even some of the meals have a dose of nostalgia about them – spinach and feta cheese damper, Fox specialty scrambled eggs with melted vintage cheddar and toasted bread, and the highly recommended Fox’s Midnight Raid – the Stolen Larder Meal (like a gourmet Ploughman’s) of off the bone ham, eggs boiled or scrambled, caramelized onion jam, vintage cheddar, bourbon baked beans and bread.

Other breakfast options include breakfast wraps, avo toasted newly-baked bread (all breakfasts are available until COB) while lunch /supper dishes include vegetarian chilli, corn, lentils, juiced lime, coriander, cumin and Greek yoghurt with corn chips or toasted bread, beef burger featuring a brown-sugared and red-onioned patty and the amazing salad-like-no-other Rabbit’s Forest Feast – a bowl of crunchy wild greens, apple-cidered pearl barley, carrots and blueberries with a heavenly vinaigrette of dark balsamic, tamari and apricot.

In addition to the meals there’s also Mum’s hand-churned ice-cream and a small range of sweet baked delights available, sourced from the catering outfit in the shop next door. As such Fox and Rabbit makes the perfect (and rare) place to drop by for an afternoon pick-me-up of coffee with a just-baked Monte Carlo.

The friendly duo behind this delightful little neighbourhood café are Victoria and David, and as a passionate ex-coffee roaster and barista, David makes what are arguably the best coffees in Paddington. Using separate beans for black or white coffees (sourced from West End’s Coffee Roasters), the beans that make the perfect long black are especially air-roasted for the occasion (one of only 2 places in Australia that does this), while the others are selected as the best to go with milk.

And if coffee’s not your thing, there’s Banoffee Milkshakes, Cookies and Cream thick shakes, hot chocolate with marshmallow, Berry smoothies, apple or orange juice and Bondi fragrant chai.

Fox and Rabbit Coffee Co Paddington

Nice to know – Fox & Rabbit Coffee Co is not just a café but a bit of a community hub – the kind laidback (student-friendly place) you can linger for an hour with a coffee and read a book, do some work or play a game of cards.
