Just Earth is the quintessential West End workers cottage café, where you’ll find the bohemian community-minded soul of this inner-city suburb alive and kicking.
Set away from the main action along Vulture Street, Just Earth, which has its own in-house roaster, eco store and backyard performance space is a casual laidback home-away-from where everyone, including children and dogs are welcome.
The scrumptious food menu is all-inclusive too, catering for vegans, vegetarians, paleo devotees and gluten and lactose intolerant folk, with everything including sauces, dips, ice-cream and crackers made in-house from organic locally-sourced produce with no chemicals and preservatives.
All day (seasonal) breakfast includes the likes of Almond meal Porridge and Almond meal Pancakes (topped with caramelized honey bananas, coconut yoghurt, fresh berries, toasted pistachios and almonds), Vegetarian Breakfast (eggs, spiced baked beans, mushrooms, tomato, spinach, kale, seasonal greens and sour dough) or Traditional (substitute spinach and kale with smoked sausage and wood-smoked bacon) or Hot Smoked Fish of the Morning (poached eggs, hot smoked fish, fresh rocket & quinoa, topped with avocado and horseradish cream dressing).
The Lunch menu draws inspiration from Asia, with options such as Prawn, Chicken or Vegetarian Laksa, Quinoa Vietnamese salad Bowl (with tempeh, chicken or pulled pork marinated in lemongrass, chilli and garlic), Tender Beef Rendang, Lemon Pesto Prawn Cakes, Grilled Tempeh Sandwich or Vegan Moussaka.
And, for sweet tooths, there’s a delicious range of raw and baked sweet treats available from the counter.
Hot Drinks include the fair trade house-roasted blend Stop9Vulture (with the option of single origin), black and herbal teas, hot chocolate, cacao chocolate, chai latte and the golden latte (turmeric, ginger, cardamon and almond milk), and Kambucha (ginger and turmeric, hibiscus lime and Buchi).
A choice of cold drinks meanwhile includes smoothies made with organic milk of choice: cow, coconut, soy or almond, fresh juices or watermelon and lime frappe.
As well as the funky interior nooks with their jumble of vintage furniture, the back yard is a great place to retreat under the palm trees, with stunning street art on walls, a performance stage, communal tables with umbrellas, a kids cubby house with slide and bowls of water for pups.
On Friday evenings from 4.30, the backyard area comes alive for Wine Downs, with live acoustic music sessions (from 5.30), espresso martinis and watermelons daiquiris and snacks like house-made dips organic popcorn, sweet potato chips and frittata muffins available. Children and 4-legged pals are more than welcome to come along to these sessions.
Just Earth’s little in-house fair trade and eco shop makes a great spot to pick up a gift or something for the home or self, such as eco bling jewellery, jute penguins, recycled sari handbags, self-managed soap etc.
Need to know - Not only is the backyard a great play area, one of Brisbane's best menus for kids can be found here at Just Earth: sweet potato with aioli, eggs and bacon, coconut pancakes, frittata of the day with kids salad, vegie sticks and hummus, organic popcorn, chicken fajitas or home-made shepherds pie.
Nice to know – Not just a great place to hang out and recharge, Just Earth is a social enterprise which aims to help alleviate poverty globally through fair trade relationships with producers, as well as assisting local folk who may be disadvantaged in the labour market by providing business training, finance and retail opportunities.
