French Twist

Bulimba

The traffic in Bulimba's industrial back streets has picked up since locals started discovering this gorgeous little cafe patisserie, French Twist.

This oasis of greenery in an aviary-like cage has been decked out with rustic tables and chairs, shelves of bread, a patisserie counter, a vintage weighing machine stacked with magazines and a gleaming espresso machine.

Coffee is Silk from Melbourne, daily loaves come freshly baked, pastries are strictly French tartes and gateaux and there's also a smattering of delish savoury stuff – a tartine plate mix of petite open-faced sandwiches, filled baguettes and panades – rustic bakes of pumpkin, hale and gruyere cheese and the like.

This is also a charming spot for breakfast with a twist (served till 1 on weekends) – on the menu are Brioche French toast with spiced poached pears, herbed haloumi tartine or free range eggs with a choice of roast pumpkin or prosciutto.
