Hansell & Gretel

Gaythorne

Hansell & Gretel Espresso and Breakfast Bar is arguably one of the best breakfast cafes in Brisbane's north: an arty little foodie's den found nestled in a 1970s shopping strip just off Samford Rd.

Inside the creativity of the owners permeates everything from the funky collage feature wall by the owner's wife, the chef's stencil art over the kitchen and the owner's eclectic teapot collection through to the inspired menu that derives from round the world cuisines.

House specialties include Devilish Eggs (a vegetarian dish featuring 2 of the world's hottest chillis), Bubble'n'Squeak (corn, peas, carrot and potato hash with cheese, pea and mint salsa and egg) and Scooby Doo (cheese kransky wrapped in bacon with fried egg and hollandaise).

Other scrumptious dishes include the likes of the Matador (tomato, chorizo, Aussie jack cheese and baked eggs in a clay pot) or a range of creative Eggs Benny (guacamole, chorizo, BBQ beef or shroom - the must try house specialty).

There's also stuff like the Bogan Burger, a mullet-raising combo of fried egg, cheese, BBQ sauce and smoked paprika aioli on a bun - and, from 11am, other delights such as Charcoal Chicken Caesar Salad, Persian sweet potato salad, Bulgolgi Beef roll and Korean BBQ In the counter are daily made sandwiches on toasted Turkish and a delicious range of fresh baked sweet stuff such as Turkish Delight muffins, croissants and Cherry Ripe quinoa pudding.

In-house coffee is Genovese (go double shot if you like a good caffeine hit) or try one of the quirky old skool cappuccinos which come as Jaffa, mocha or nutta-cino, or a traditional Vietnamese espresso.

Need to know: there's limited drive-up parking out front. Inside a book shelf has magazines to browse and a smattering of children's story and colouring books.
