On The Side
On The Side is the hip little sidekick cafe bar to big sibling, Spanish-inspired Vaquero Bar and Dining in Albion.
Located adjacent to Vaquero on Sandgate Rd, On The Side caters for morning brunch and after work drinks as it operates as an espresso bar by day and a cocktail and wine bar by night.
The bar has a cosy ambient feel with dim lighting, booth and bar seating and a spectacular rope feature that the owner created himself. Diners can seat themselves inside or outside on tables or at the window.
The breakfast menu includes a few house favorites including sourdough toast, a range of croissants and poached eggs. The ham and cheese croissant is popular amongst the locals, topped with melting cheese and served with greenery – it’s the perfect early morning feed or mid-morning snack.
For lunch diners can tuck into a deluxe toasty, Vaquero quiche or pie or one of their daily special sandwiches, not to mention the range of sweet treats provided by nearby specialty cake kitchen, Vanilla Pod.
The baked goods change daily, with selections such as melting moments, muffins and an almost too pretty to eat – lemon, chocolate and pistachio biscuit. All go down a treat when accompanied by one of their freshly brewed Locale No 141 coffees.
By night, the beer taps serve Mountain Goat’s Steam Ale and Scorcher Summer Ale. Alongside a range of quality wines and delicious cocktails, the bar is a top spot for an after-work beverage or weekend sundowners.
Need to know – limited street parking and a nearby public carpark is available.
*At the time of visiting in April 2017 the bar was not open to the public - it is slated to open by early May.
