Farrier

New Farm

FARRIER IS NO LONGER A BAR OPEN TO THE PUBLIC BUT YOU CAN HIRE IT FOR FUNCTIONS.

Farrier is a secret underground bar and supper club found in the old horse stables underneath New Farm’s landmark historic Queens Arms Hotel.

Farrier New Farm

Entry to Farrier, which is an absolute must visit if in the James St vicinity, is via a black stables door around the corner on Arthur St. Push it open and take the stairs down through a foyer, past a wall display of vintage farm implements and into one of Brisbane’s coolest most ambient bars, that also happens to be a fantastic late night supper club.

Low ceilings and backlit sandstone walls form the backdrop while rustic old sandstock brick partitions (one with the original horse stall latch still attached) that are remnants of the original stables divide the space up into cosy dining and lounge nooks.

Horse themed lounge chairs inside underground bar

Where 19th century hotel patrons’ horses were once tethered, now drinkers and late night diners gather on vintage armchairs, cowskin stools or rustic chairs and tables for boutique wines, craft beers, cocktail and divine East Meets West inspired eats (which are served through until 2am every day of the week).

The drinks menu runs the spectrum of local and interstate craft beers through a carefully curated section of boutique red, white and sparkling wines to classic cocktails like Negroni, Espresso Martini and Mojitos alongside Specialty Cocktails like the Black or Bohemian Mojito or Soco Fizz.

Drinks and stunning atmosphere aside, the big drawcard at Farrier is the delectable food. From opening at midday through till 10 at night, diners can choose from Street Nibbles such as Blow-Torched Scallops served with crispy turmeric wafer tacos or Fried Cuttlefish and Big Eats like Char-Sui sandwich, BBQ Lamb Ribs or the divine Torn Red Curry Brisket with Asian leaf and radishes.

Farrier New Farm

From 10 through till 2am diners can rock up for their fill of the popular Baos (Stuffed Chinese Style Bread) which comes with fillings such as the must try Peking Duck, fried mushrooms and coriander and is also available throughout the day, BBQ Pork Steamed Buns, more BBQ Lamb Ribs, Chunky Thick Fried Chips with tomato ketchup or late night to-die-for desserts like Chinese Donuts with Green Tea ice-cream and Sesame White Chocolate, Chocolate Satay Bars and Deep-Fried Ice-Cream.

Nice to know – Unlike many bars, Farrier has great acoustics, with a mellow soundtrack of everything from Old Skool Brit rock to funk and hip hop played at a just right volume.

The menu may have changed since our visit.
